sketch book 2020 - 01 Drawing on paper

I am ashamed to say I haven't drawn on paper in years now. It simply isn't as easy as doing it on a computer terms of setting up and materials needed. The image above is from a new sketchbook I got for the holidays and was rendered with Ebony pencil on paper - the subject... just things within reach.

Drawing in real media does have its set backs but it also has many advantages... it's more tactile, your ability to see something in front of you and render it live and quickly is a great tool for improving how you draw and see the world. The limited ability to correct mistakes or zoom in 500% for details make sys pat closer attention to what you are doing and as a result, you learn more about the subject and how to represent things in the real world as art.

Oddly  it didn't feel weird sitting down at my drawing table, located next to tay computer desk to remind me I should be using it, in the slightest.  This is not high art or even great sketching but I am happy I didn't completely "lose it" and am surprised and happy that what I drew looked somewhat like what I was drawing.

I think they're fun, quirky little sketches, and I can identify everything including the iPod shuffle. :D I totally get the 'still wanting to use pencil' thing as I've lately gone back to pencil and paper for the comic though I still ink on the iPad. In my case, I get looser the smaller my pencil gets. There's this sweet spot when the pencil is between about four and two inches long, which means the sweet spot doesn't last long! Keep sketching with pencil. You might find mixing media is a lot of fun.

I want to sketch outside and get more spontaneous with my work. I could sketch on the iPad too, but it is; t the same and I really like the idea of not having to recharge anything when drawing. Just sharpening. I was surprised how much like my old drawings these came out. I thought my first attempt would be really... really... terrible and it wasn't. I think I was falling into the trap of believing drawing with a tablet is somehow not really drawing because... reasons I guess.

It's as much drawing as anything. But there's a difference. Neither is better than the other. I've really enjoyed pencil lately. But I keep looking for the undo button! Seriously! I've been trying to loosen up for my entire life with drawing. I'm sorta kinda starting to get there. I think these are the loosest thing I've seen you do yet. Keep going!

They are certainly looser than my pen and ink drawings on paper, the stuff I was doing while we working at the Picnic took me months sometimes to draw... not exactly spontaneous! I have always used ebony pencils for drawing becuase they are so black, like ink. But I am thinking maybe they are limiting the tonal range to darker ranges. I will do some pencil and ink over it with rapidigraph pen next

Or you could try inking it in Procreate... just saying. :D

There is that. I like ink on paper now and then... I KNOW you understand that! Procreate has been alittle buggy lately for me. I only have the lowest end iPad and that isn't quite as powerful as it needs to be.
