rant: No more Instagram

I deleted my Instagram account this past weekend. Pretty much no one will notice I'm sure. I tried for a year plus some to get some traction for my art and book sales and came out with nothing. I took some advice setting it up from my friend Jesus in Boston and tried much of what he suggested to get people to follow my posts but other suggestions like put myself on there in videos, expose more of personal life etc I just can not deal with.  It's well know I find much of the social media distasteful and gross and my time on Instagram did not dissuade me of that. Mike Luce gave good advice to follow artists I like as inspiration and there are some I was happy to see their art on display but mostly I saw people filming their pets dying for views, gym bros and teenagers giving "life advice" people desperately doing "trends" and "challenges" for attention as well as wannabe comedians all doing pretty much the same schtick over and over again. I did see photos from family and friends I would not have the chance to see otherwise but that was the exception not the rule.

After only a couple days I already feel better. I don't have time to post 1-5 times a day and I have no desire to share my life with random strangers for "likes" or scroll for hours when I could be drawing or making animations.

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I don't follow people like the ones you mention, grubbing for attention. Mostly I follow people I saw on "Portrait Artist of the Year." Still, I don't think you're missing anything if you just make the art which makes you happy.

I don't follow them either, but they come up in my feed all the time, even if I say I don't want to see posts from them. I have received some good suggestions of artists, just not enough to counter the deluge of other crap. I have been seriously considering dumping flickr as well. I have some images with 10s of 1000s of looks but that doesn't get me anywhere either. I just cant stomach the idea of going on FaceTime and I think that wouldn't be any better. When Bump the wonder horse starts a social platform, I'll join!
